It understands to your Dog: Keys of the Canine Ethology with Silvia Mallofré

Patito to the Air, the program of The Prat Ràdio 91.6 FM presented by María José Guerrero, us adentramos in the fascinante world of the canine ethology with Silvia Mallofré, skilled ethologist in animal behaviour. During the interview, Silvia shares his path, the challenges that confront the tutors and the keys to improve the relation among the dogs and his human families.
Silvia began his professional career in a very different field: the graphic design and the advertising. However, his passion by the dogs and the desire to find a deeper purpose spent it to leave this world to form like clinical ethologist in the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Since, it has devoted to comprise and improve the life of the dogs and his tutors. The clinical ethology, as it explains Silvia, is a branch of the biology that studies the animal behaviour. In his case, his work centres in dogs, accosting problems of behaviour like the anxiety by separation, the reactivity and the phobias.
One of the central subjects of the conversation was the identification and treatment of the problems of behaviour more frequent in the dogs: anxiety by separation, reactivity and phobias. Silvia stood out the importance to attend to an ethologist from the first signals of unusual behaviour. Also it underlined that a lot of behaviours that look normal for the families can be indicators of serious problems for the dogs. Further of the treatment, Silvia insists in that the paper of the ethologist is also warn problems. It recommends that the families consult to an ethologist when adopting or buy a dog to understand better his needs and guarantee a convivencia harmonious from the beginning. Besides, it explains that factors like the early contact with the mother, the suitable socialisation and a positive environment during the first weeks of life are crucial for the emotional welfare of the animal.
Another interesting subject was the humanización of the dogs. Silvia explains that it is important to treat them like what are: dogs. However, it signals that some practices, like warming up to the dogs in cold climates, no always are signals of humanización, but a form to take care his physical welfare. Also it spoke on the apegos, clearing that terms like "hiperapego" are wrong. In his place, mentions apegos sure and unsure, standing out the importance to boost healthy relations among the dogs and his tutors.
Silvia concludes with a fundamental council: educate on the behaviour of the dogs is the best way to guarantee his welfare and avert problems on a long-term basis.
